Abstract
School shootings in the United States have been an issue of great concern since the Columbine shooting in 1999. According to a report by the Washington Post, there have been at least 310 schools that have experienced gun violence since 1999. Parents and the public reasonably expect that children be kept safe while attending school. In order to achieve that goal, it is important that we understand gun violence and its causes. At the same time, it is also imperative to understand the influence that school shootings have on gun policies and public opinion. When school shootings occur, the community and the students in the school experience heavy loss and emotional damage. By studying policy changes after major school shootings, it is imperative to ensure that these losses are not unnoticed, which can also go in parallel with how the public’s opinions after these events are important to understand. The purpose of this research is to analyze school shootings since 1999 because the effects of the Columbine shooting have significant effects on policy change, and to understand their influence on gun policies and public opinion.
