"This Action Research Project examined whether student motivation and engagement in Physical Education could be improved through a modified tennis unit designed for fifth-grade students. The study was conducted in response to a common challenge observed during competitive activities: while many students expressed interest in participating, some were reluctant to engage fully in competitive game settings. To address this issue, a tennis unit was intentionally designed to support learners of varying skill levels through individual skill development, cooperative learning experiences, and structured competitive practice.\n\nThe project was grounded in the principles of Self-Determination Theory, with instructional strategies aimed at fostering competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Competence was supported through repeated skill practice and opportunities for success. Autonomy was encouraged by allowing students to make choices, such as creating team names and selecting certain activities. Relatedness was developed through cooperative tasks and an emphasis on sportsmanship and peer support. The findings explored the impact of these strategies on student participation, motivation, and overall engagement during Physical Education lessons."

"Located between the north tennis court and the northwest corner of the west wing of Bellamy Hall are two millstones. These stones stand in nearly the same place as they did when they were placed on a pedestal behind Campbell Hall in 1925. The millstones are there to commemorate the hardships and sacrifice of the people who first settled the Willamette Valley. The stones were made by a man named Medis Vanderpool, who used the millstones in one of his mills in the Parker district, southeast of Monmouth. Also on the pedestal is a plaque dedicating the tennis courts to the men of Oregon Normal School who enlisted for World War I. \r\n\r\nThe plaque reads \"During the early years of our nation's history millstones like these from the Vanderpool Mill in the Parker district of southeast Monmouth, ground grain for the white settlers.\""
