With few materials about the American Deaf community geared towards social workers, there may not be sufficient resources for social workers to develop the cultural competency necessary to provide the best services. It is important to understand social workers’ perspectives towards and experience with Deaf people in order to assess the need for continuing education in the field. This study asks the question, what do social workers need to know in order to work with Deaf clients and interpreters?
The initial hypothesis was that social workers in Texas would have negative to neutral attitudes towards Deaf people, as a result of their lack of contact with that population. Social workers from Texas were recruited to participate in an online anonymous survey that included the Attitudes to Deafness Scale developed by Cooper, Rose, and Mason (2004). The results of the survey showed that social workers in Texas actually have neutral to positive views of the Deaf community. While it was not possible to identify a definitive reason why this might be the case, the overwhelming majority of social workers surveyed voiced a need for more training focusing on the American Deaf community. "Picture Given by Esther Mason. It was taken in either the winter or spring term 1922 in the living room of 'East House'. This is the house located at 141 North monmouth Avenue.
The names of those shown in the picture are listed on the back. However, there is at least one error which I can identify. The first lady to the left sitting on the devenport is not Bessie Brigham. Bessie is the second lady of the four sitting on the davenport. There may be other errors of which i am unaware, but this is clear since I am aquainted with bessie Brigham.
The lady on the far right sitting on the davenport is Miss Bertha Brainerd, then the registrar of the Oregon Normal School.
It is noted that there are only three names listed as 'on davenport.' Perhaps the one to the far left was unknown to the person who wrote these names, thus accounting for the apparent error in indentifying Bessie Brigham."

For other uses, please ask permission from the author. | http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/ It's Just What You Do The grandparent role is a dynamic and often ambivalent relationship requiring simultaneous navigation of “being there” and “not interfering” in the lives of grandchildren (Mason, May, & Clarke, 2007). These relationships change as grandchildren mature and can result in new grandparent-grandchild connections based on communication, intimacy, and mutual respect (Sheehan & Petrovic, 2008). Utilizing a sample of grandfathers and young-adult grandchildren (N = 32), this study investigated the impact that grandfathers have on their young-adult grandchildren. Utilizing a life course perspective, we asked: a) How do grandfathers invest in the futures of their young-adult grandchildren? b) How do young-adult grandchildren recognize and receive their grandfather’s investments in their futures? Results suggest that grandfathers emphasized their grandparenting role but undervalued their contributions to their grandchildren. Grandfathers and grandchildren also did not always agree on the transmissions intended and received. When asked to recall meaningful memories of grandfathers, young-adult grandchildren were more likely to remember instances of shared hobbies, interests, and personal connection.
