This paper is an action research project that examines the efficacy of an English Language Development teacher’s strategies to promote class struggle unionism and socialist theory in the classroom. The study also explores the implications of pursuing such a pedagogy. Is it effective? Is it professional? Do other educators view it as worthwhile? Is this approach reconcilable with a standards-based, inquiry-oriented curriculum? The research focuses on the teacher’s instructional methods in one designated ELD class. The educator, who has been teaching for two and a half years on a restricted license, specifically hoped to explore the efficacy of strategies in regards to Multilingual Learners of English (MLEs), who he saw as among the most exploited groups in a capitalist organization of the economy. After teaching his lessons and reviewing data samples, the teacher concluded that students are capable of learning dense concepts derived from socialist theory, including class formation, class struggle, and class struggle unionism. The most effective ways to accomplish this include sheltered strategies, multicultural representation, and open-ended discussion.
