Students don’t see the connection between math and the real world. Students are viewing math as a rigid set of rules instead of as a creative and exciting subject to explore. A few of the problems that are in traditional classrooms are: students having a fear of being publicly embarrassed, students memorizing methods instead of truly understanding the math , math problems not being relevant to students, and students not being engaged during class. A few methods and teaching strategies that can help solve these problems include: Gradual Release, Open Middle problems, and the 5 Practices of Discussion. By applying these strategies and tools to everyday math classrooms, math can become the intriguing and creative subject that it is meant to be.
