Purposive sampling was used to recruit diverse alumni following different career paths (i.e., graduate school or straight to work), representing alumni who identified as first generation, nontraditional, Latina/Latino or as a student of color. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to understand alumni career paths and gather information about decision-making, barriers, supports, and advice for current psychology majors. Interviews were audio-taped and are currently being transcribed. Some alumni agreed to participate in an “Alumni Profile,” which highlighted specific alumni by name, shared details of individual’s specific story, and were made publicly available. The current presentation will share the experiences of the undergraduate researchers exploring qualitative research, learning about career options available after graduation, and benefits for current students. The aim of this project was to assess perceptions and utilization of portfolios among OHSU SON students. Previous research suggests that portfolios can be used as a repository to highlight achievements, demonstrate competence to employers, and can help prepare for job interviews. A survey containing both quantitative and qualitative questions was sent out to student cohorts, alumni, and OHSU faculty on perceptions of portfolio benefits and utilization of the portfolio. Results showed that over half of the students felt that the portfolio was not useful, nor did they see the benefits. Almost all the students surveyed did not update their portfolio each term. Alumni felt the current portfolio was beneficial only when curating a resume. Faculty felt that the portfolio could be valuable to students but could be better implemented. There is ample evidence to show that portfolios can be beneficial for undergraduate student nurses. Recommendations were made to implement changes to increase student perceptions of portfolio benefits and portfolio utilization. This includes providing students with an orientation dedicated to the portfolio, change the platform from Sakai to Google Sites, include the portfolio in course curriculum, and remind students to download content from Sakai at the end of each term. Currently, there are not any education programs for sign language interpreters at these institutions. This research is cross-disciplinary between HBCUs and the sign language profession. A review of literature addresses issues in current interpreter programs under the phenomenon of ‘White gaze’ in the profession explained through the lens of anti-racist policies. The aims of this research were to answer: 1) What are the benefits of having an interpreter education program (IEP) at an HBCU? 2) Why is there a need for our (Black/African American) own space? and 3) If given the option, would current and former Black interpreting students have chosen to go to an HBCU for their IEP? Bishop State Community College is an HBCU that once offered an interpreting program. The program was analyzed through four semi-structured interviews with administrators and alumni. A look into the inner workings of the program was coupled with survey results. A mixed-methods approach uncovered five major themes from interview and survey data. Those themes are Culture, Positive Impact on Black Deaf community, Increase Numbers/Representation, Racism/Microaggressions, and Program Structure. This study provides continuing conversations for recognizing the importance of not only diversifying the profession but educating the current/future pool of interpreters on serving, understanding, and working with the demographic of Black Deaf and hearing consumers, interpreters, students, and interpreter educators. A side note: as of 2019 the cart for the bell is stored in Swendel Hall. Old ACC.RG.2012.840: Bell The original bell was cast in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1886 and was placed in the bell tower with the completion of the south wing of Campbell Hall in 1889. This bell developed a crack and was replaced with a smaller bell from one of the Monmouth churches. The new smaller bell remained the belfry until 1924 when it was removed because local residents complained that students rang the bell incessantly and at inappropriate times. The bell does not show up again until 1933 when it was mounted on a wooden platform and housed in the Administration building. Theta Delta Phi, a men's service organization, were in charge of ringing the bell when home games were won, and for displaying it at Homecoming and 4th of July parades. The bell was not in the belfry when the tower collapsed during the Columbus Day Storm in 1962. Because the bell had no place to be hung, the Carillon was gifted by the Alumni Association in 1965. Now the bell hangs in the tower of the Werner University Center since 1999. Atop the building is the Carillon, a gift from the Oregon College of Education Alumni Association in 1965. The plaque details the history of the grove, both old and new. The grove began in 1867 and was located south of Campbell Hall. Most of the trees were destroyed in the 1962 Columbus Day Storm. South of Bellamy Hall a few trees, the last of the original grove, remain. Beginning on the tenth anniversary of the storm, Alumni, friends of the college, students, faculty, and college staff began the new grove in the location it is today.
