Abstract
The Contagious Diseases Act allowed the British government to arrest anyone who was thought to be a prostitute and perform unauthorized, and oftentimes non consensual, medical tests on them. Despite the confidence the British government felt while backing up the Act, there has been plenty of evidence to show that the spread of disease actually increased while the Act was in place, and declined sharply after the repeal in the late 19th Century. Many different organizations were created to put a stop to the unfair treatment against women, such as the Woman’s Club and the protests put on by Josephine Butler, despite the fact that the women were known or suspected prostitutes. This paper will explain how discriminatory the Acts were towards the citizens of Natal Africa, India, and the British Isles, more specifically the women who lived in these places. The Contagious Diseases Act was designed to aid in the health and well-being of the colonial population from these specific countries. The creation of the Contagious Diseases Act was contrived to address the health of the British soldiers rather than the women who were being infected as well. As a consequence, the Act also blurred the lines between social classes and racial domesticity in the British Isles, which will be addressed throughout this thesis.

Description
Board of Trustees Record Book, 1855-1882
This is the oldest WOU-related item in the University Archives. The record book contains meeting minutes, financial data, and campus building plans from WOU’s earliest days.
In January 1856, pioneers from Illinois founded Monmouth University. They allocated a portion of their federally-granted land claims for university property, and named the settlement Monmouth after their home town. J.B. Smith, Thomas Lucas and Ira F.M. Butler were among the founders. Butler was for many years President of the Board of Trustees, and the minutes ledger kept by Butler provide a historical record of the Trustees early decisions. In this artifact’s first ten years, the university’s office of the presidency had not yet been institutionalized. The first official president was Levi Lindsay Rowland. He was inaugurated in 1865.

Novice ESOL Teachers’ Loneliness and Stress
Abstract
The first years of work for new teachers can be particularly difficult; this is especially true for english to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teachers (Brannan & Bleistein, 2012; Warford & Reeves, 2003). This study was designed to explore potential issues within this important group and specifically examined the relationship between loneliness and stress for novice ESOL teachers. Forty-seven novice ESOL teachers completed self-report measures assessing their levels of perceived stress and loneliness. The results revealed that loneliness significantly predicted perceived stress (β = .51, p < .001.). Furthermore, exploratory analyses indicated that marital status influenced loneliness ratings but not stress levels. These findings indicate that for novice teachers that often teach abroad, feelings of loneliness are an important issue to consider.
