Abstract
This cover artwork pays (see what I did there?) tribute to the vanitas still life paintings of 17th-century Dutch Baroque painters, in which flowers symbolize life’s impermanence. Neon price labels are collaged on top of one another, radiating outward to depict the explosive look of Crape Myrtle flowers on campus that bloom in the summertime. Just like the Crape Myrtle plant’s flowers, our ownership of material possessions is impermanent. Scribbled lines made with markers and pens optically mix. Ink is conceived to be a permanent medium, but the price label stickers allow for a quick cover-up.

Fall 2023 INSIGHTS Cover Design
Abstract
With the use of collage and photo manipulation as primary design techniques, this cover features the intersection of color, movement, and light. The layering of various photographic elements, the vibrancy and saturation of colors, and the abstract form and moving parts, symbolize the complexity of the human mind. This design specifically explores the concept of the lightbulb idea, the desire to access a source of creativity, or the next big thing that could change the course of humanity. However, this cover also implies great ideas and creativity truly reside nowhere else but within ourselves and the world around us. It is when we open our minds that we are able to form connections that reach the potential of our creative insights and unlock the possibilities of the human imagination.

Cover
Abstract
Inspiration for the cover was pulled from topics within the journal and includes graphic, photo, and textual elements from several of Makena Harris' previous projects in order to create this collage. The cover features women in STEM/STEAM and research careers who blazed trails and opened doors for many women to come. Her work was rooted in positivity, hopefulness, determination, and strength; all of which are qualities she feels that the two women featured on the cover, Sheila de Bretteville and Neri Oxman, possess. Additionally, color was a major driving force in this piece, with the rosey hue being reclaimed to demonstrate power and strength in femininity.
