The purpose of this study was to determine whether participation in a culturally responsive community music event raised participants’ feelings of interconnectedness, as well as opinions of traditional music education. Methods: This study analyzed 6 classes that took part in a culturally responsive community musical event. After gathering ethnic and cultural data on my students, they participated in a unit where students learned folk songs and dances from various cultures found within the student body. Students were taught these songs and dances during general music class, and the unit was closed with an event where families and students learned, danced, and sang all together. Before and after this unit and event, student surveys were conducted where students shared their feelings of connectedness within their community, and opinions on their general music class. Results: While class data varied significantly, overall students felt more connected with their community after participation in this unit and event, and students found their music class more fun, interesting, useful, and relevant. Abstract Dance has always been a form of creative expression utilized for a variety of reasons, including the use of telling stories, emotional processing, and awareness. The way the body moves can create connections between the dancer and the audience, allowing for the telling of a story or emotions without words, as evidenced by various studies. Through this outlet, I created my own dance that presents the challenges and struggles of mental health. Due to the negative stereotypes of mental disorders, it is vital that people bring awareness to how debilitating and difficult they are to have. Each section of the dance represents a different mental health illness that I have, including Depression, Anxiety, and PTSD. Many previous dancers have showcased mental health through dance before, and I use some of these as my own inspiration. The effects of injuries can range from resting for two weeks to career ending. Many dancers, especially at the college level, lack accessible education on how to prevent their injuries. This research is being targeted at WOU dancers, hoping to give them easy access to injury prevention materials and exercises, while helping to minimize the financial burden of seeking professional help. Through detailed analyses of five major regions of the body, information on common dance injuries becomes clearer and easier to analyze. The analyses will include classification of major joints, ranges of motion, types of motion, and major contributing muscles. The major regions of the body will be classified as ankle/foot, leg/knee, hip/pelvis, spine, and shoulder/scapula. After examining the anatomical background, exercises to increase strength, flexibility and stability of the major contributing muscles will be developed. Given the vast number of possible injuries, the study has been delimited to include a sampling of common dance injuries that will allow this research to be applicable for many college-age dancers. Over many years of research we have discovered that the cure wasn’t easy to find and that cancer was a far more complicated disease than originally expected. Cancer is a disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth, that begins with genetic mutations. With advances in science we came to understand our genetics and then we found some potential causes for cancer, in our genes. It is hoped that if we can reverse the faulty genetic mutations that cause cancer, we may be able to cure it. The mutations occur in two groups of genes, oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, and the latter is the focus of this paper. Tumor suppressor genes stop the cell cycle and can cause the cell to go into apoptosis, also known as programmed cell death. As the name suggests, these genes help prevent tumors and cancer from forming. When mutated they lose their function and thus their ability to prevent tumors, which can help give rise to cancers. Without active tumor suppressor genes, cells can grow out of control, which can lead to more mutations being gained and a tumor being formed. The genes I looked at are TP53, INK4, and PTEN-they have been chosen as they represent the range of functions tumor suppressor genes have and have been seen in cancers across the body. I looked at where the mutations are 5 occurring within the genes and examined potential differences between reproductive and nonreproductive organ-based cancers. Through the data I collected and the results of my analysis, I planned to create a dance to be performed in the Spring Dance Concert in 2020. This dance will be inspired by American and German theatrical Modern dance and will be an abstract representation of how tumor suppressors work and how they act when mutated. For my thesis, I blended art and science through the analysis of data and the creation of a dance. I explored how cancers and patients are affected by tumor suppressor genes in reproductive organ-based versus non-reproductive organ-based cancers. The reason behind this comparison lies in the difference in how the different organ system’s cells grow in terms of rate. It is hoped that a difference will be found and that may help understanding how cancer works. And then that can be explored through a dance and shared. Though this piece was originally intended for the stage, the pandemic changed my plans and forced me to adapt it into a dance film. This thesis describes my process as I attempted to adapt my original piece into a dance film, as well as examining the influences which made this work possible. In this thesis, I examined the artistic influences which brought me to who I am as a choreographer today, paying homage to the pioneers of modern dance who inspired generations of dancers like myself.
