Description
The WOU Veteran’s Resource Center was created through the initiative of Professor William Bud Brown (Criminal Justice). The students in Professor David Doellinger’s HST 301 Introduction to Historical Research (Fall 2023) and HST 408 Oral History (Winter 2025) began developing a history of the VRC. This history includes transcripts and analysis of oral history interviews and other documents that were collected that are connected to its history and the work of Professor Brown.

Abstract
Natalya Mytareva is an undervalued yet pivotal contributor to the translation and interpreting community. Beginning her career as a university professor teaching interpretation and translation courses at Volgograd State University in Russia, she came to the United States as an immigrant and had to change careers entirely more than once upon arrival. Her experience as Communications Director at the International Institute of Akron, a refugee resettlement agency, deepened her understanding of the critical need for qualified interpreters in healthcare settings. As one of 13 founding commissioners of the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), Natalya's work led to the first healthcare interpreting certification exam that was nationally accredited for spoken language interpreters. Furthermore, through CCHI, she was later able to develop an English-only exam—the first of its kind created by any federal, state, or private organization—that could reliably test the interpreting skills of all healthcare interpreters. Her work revolutionized the healthcare interpreting profession by giving interpreters of all languages credentials that would put them on the same level as their colleagues in healthcare. Much can be learned from Natalya's grit, determination, and leadership style, which led to a truly transformative feat in medical interpreting history in the United States.

Description
Two women sit on a bench seat, one with a young child on her lap. We are low and left of center, and a small table with a keyboard and mouse is between us and the women. Both women focus at middle distance to our upper right, outside the frame of the image. The woman on the right, who has light skin tone and red hair, holds the boy and a stuffed toy. The boy has a pacifier in his mouth and looks at the woman on the left..That woman has light skin tone and chin-length gray hair; she speaks and uses the mouse. In the background, we can see portions of four doors and a large wall-mounted monitor.

Library Survey 2017 Executive Summary
Creator
Janeanne Rockwell-Kincanon
Description
Librarians created four similar surveys (for undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff) to evaluate the use and quality of the library’s collections, services, and facilities and to identify areas for improvement. The last such comprehensive survey was in 2006, using the LibQual+™ instrument. The 2017 surveys, using the SurveyMonkey software and taking less than 10 minutes to complete, were administered April 10-30, 2017, weeks 2-4 of the academic term. Solicitations to take the survey were multifaceted: emails to campus distribution lists and to faculty by divisions; postings to social media for the library and campus; slides on WOU Portal pages, postcards sent to employee and residential student mailboxes, and tabling with tablets at the Werner University Center. After completing the anonymous survey, participants were invited to enter their WOU username for a chance to win one of five $25 gift cards to The Press, the café inside Hamersly Library. The lead investigator was Janeanne Rockwell-Kincanon, Associate Professor & Public Services Librarian. IRB review was not sought since the purpose was internal program review.

Abstract
This essay begins with two assumptions, and throughout tries to remain honest to them. First, that the Discipline of Western Philosophy, and pedagogy too, have certain intrinsic values. And second, that when a philosophy professor teaches, their teaching should be informed by the values of philosophy and the research that has been done on pedagogy. It would be somewhat strange, after all, if philosophy were taught unphilosophically or unpedagogically. Those are my assumptions. This paper is dedicated toward answering what the values of Western Philosophy are, how current practices break them, and what a philosophy class would look like if it were philosophically and pedagogically inspired. This paper is both critical and constructive: it critiques how philosophy is generally taught, and constructs an alternative. My goal, this essay’s goal, is to convince its reader that the proposed alternative is valuable — an improvement upon how things stand today, both because of its philosophical roots and pedagogical acuity.

Let’s Work Together: Police Views on Collaborating with Recovery Coaches

Abstract
Fighting on the front lines against the opioid crisis for over three decades now, law enforcement agencies are increasingly shifting away from a strictly enforcement-based approach in favor of a public health model focused on both prevention and intervention. Embracing this new approach, many police departments are collaborating with non-traditional law enforcement partners, such as recovery coaches. Although many police departments across the nation are currently engaging in, or strongly considering, a police-recovery coach collaboration, there is little research regarding police attitudes toward this type of partnership. Therefore, this study examines police views on incorporating recovery coaches into the police station for collaboration as well as what variables predict positive views toward this collaboration. To answer these questions, officers from three New England states were electronically surveyed. Findings showed that approximately half of officers supported recovery coaches working in the police station, with variables related to demographics, addiction exposure, and views on policing predicting officer viewpoints toward collaborating with recovery coaches in this manner. The findings of this study are not only valuable to police leaders as they contemplate partnering with members of the recovery community, but to the larger criminal justice system as successful police-recovery coach partnerships can positively impact the success of individuals who are suffering from substance use disorder in their reentry efforts.

Abstract
Pretrial release reform is an important component of justice reinvestment initiatives. However, little work has examined the implementation process or stakeholder perceptions of the implementation of a pretrial release program. In this study, we explore the perceptions and experiences of stakeholders in the criminal justice system in a county in Oregon by conducting interviews with judges, district attorney’s, defenders, and pretrial staff to assess their perceptions of the reform, including the county’s adoption of the Virginia Pretrial Risk Assessment Instrument (VPRAI). Our findings highlight four main themes, which we labeled Just Keep Them Out of System, The Tool Plus Experience, What Factors Are You Talking About, and Training Would Be Great. Stakeholders generally had positive perceptions of pretrial release but expressed concern about potential barriers to successful implementation, including the risk assessment tool used, the factors evaluated, and the need for training. This research highlights the importance of assessing stakeholder perceptions when implementing reform efforts.
