Description
WWII-New Guinea Entertainment.
Rough pencil sketch of people spending free time sitting at tables, standing around, talking, drinking, dancing, etc. in a casino.
Verso: "Summer 1945."
Maurice explained there was a cadre of permanently staged soldiers at the replacement depot. Soldiers coming from the States were sent there first to replace those deployed in the South Pacific. This depicts the Soldiers Casino run by a dealer from Las Vegas. The Army had problem with local gambling clubs (a very popular activity) that would take money from the recruits using marked cards. The dealer from Las Vegas guaranteed independent gambling and got his new unmarked cards directly from Las Vegas. It was the dealer who could afford to create the put-putting motor boats made from repurposed aircraft gasoline tanks. At the replacement depot, many soldiers were opening businesses and to make money on the side. One business was with the Australians who had bully beef (corned beef). The mess sergeants would sell the real meat issued by the US to the Australians and get equal amounts of the bully beef they would serve in the mess.

Description

Ink drawing of three men performing on a low stage with listeners crouched near the front.
Written around the edge of the drawing, "The Hillbilly Ramblers, a trio of Texas boys putting on a show at the Red Cross building. Their show was cut short when our outfit was summoned back to their quarters presumably to ship out of here. The show, what there was of it was quite corny but amusing nevertheless. Particularly outstanding was a number written and spoken by the violinist. It was appropriately titled 'The Talking Blues.' The scene is the Kunai corner of the Red Cross building. Saturday, Nov. 14, 1944."
Maurice explained, a lot of the guys formed bands and The HillBilly Ramblers were one of them. Professional entertainers who had been drafted would put on shows. The replacement depot had some very talented people and they practiced their trade on down time. A memory Maurice shared was that the living quarters were built on top of cliff with the garage for all the army vehicles below. One time while sun tanning, there was a man sitting in mid-air; he was actually on a high wire practicing his craft.

Verso: "Your Horoscope for March" "Mar 1 - 20 Pisces" "Pisces seeks salvation within himself, striving always for self-sufficiency, self-knowledge and effacement of self. His aim is deep and worthy, and if he does not succeed, it is because of the difficulty of the goal rather than because he does not try. His early aim appears material, because he knows instinctively that the search for self goes on most successfully if physical wants are not a source of worry. But he is not always equipped by nature for the give-and-take of commerce, and often feels himself a failure when he should not. His 'Failure' is more often than not that of a square peg in a round hole. When he finds his noncommercial place of service, love, understanding, he goes far toward the deep kind of satisfaction that is his personal, and therefore true, success. Because his aim is different, he tries ill-advisedly to accommodate himself to what he thinks he ought to be instead of following what his heart and instinct tell him. And because he wishes deeply to do the right thing, he becomes bewildered and lost in the business of living. It all comes about because he has allowed himself to be distracted from his true desires--and because in following ab uncongenial and unfamiliar path his feet stumble. He thinks he is misunderstood--but this is true only because he misunderstood himself, tried to pal himself off for something that he wasn't, and found he didn't have the heart to go through with it. When he is being his truest, deepest self he is crystal clear--unselfish, sweet, lovable, devoted, demanding little, giving much, eager always to sacrifice himself for others. It is only in the presence of the material world, when he tries to submerge the sweetness which he may come to be ashamed of, that he is unhappy. It is then he becomes demanding, jealous, unreliable [sic], self-deceived, and perhaps even deceptive--because he is trying to force his meditative spirit into a harness where it must try to be something it isn't. Let Pisces follow his heart, his conscience, his inner desire for service, self-realization and self-knowledge, and the world be damned, and he is the happiest, most useful of mortals, living comfortably with deep spiritual truths that give him an almost mystic grip on other people and on the reins of his own life."
Maurice explained that any scrap of paper was used to do a drawing or sketch. Horoscope on the back is connected to his birthday on the 11th of March. He must have found a horoscope somewhere and used it for the drawing.

Description
WWII-Natives/New Guinea.
Ink drawing of a native (upper torso, shoulders, and head). Labeled, "Raroro."
Maurice explained this native posed for him who worked on a plantation. The British had a number of coconut, and banana plantations; they would put a tax on some of the coastal natives and require the tax payment in money. They would take them from their village and move them work on a plantation, where they would stay there until they made enough money to pay the tax. The tags this native is wearing is a plantation identification tag. The earrings were newspapers or comic strips tucked in extended ear lobes.
Maurice describes this drawing in his letter dated 1944-11-26_27 saying, "In the sketch of Raroro (that was the name given on his dog tag) that roll he was protruding from his left ear lobe is a roll of paper just for [scratched out word] ornament. The lobe and the complete edge of his right ear are pierced by small colored rings. They completely circle the ear. Just above that, sticking out of his hair is the end of a native comb. I haven’t shown it very well. They are made of split bamboo and are smoothing like this: [sketch of comb] when I first saw one I thought it was a fish hook. These natives put anything colorful on their hair. Raroro [scratched out word] had no decoration in his hair but had the top dyed red."

Description
WWII-Services/New Guinea.
Drawing of several men crouched near lister bags (canvas water bag).

A lister bag outside the company supply room around which the boys gathered awaiting the arrival of the Supply Sergeant to lead us over to the battalion supply room, thence to the camp supply room (that damned chain of command again), where I picked up some clothing I had coming."
Maurice explained the lister bag was supposed to purify the water. You would hang a bag with spigots at the bottom, filled with water. Chlorine was put in the water to kill any germs. The problem was that the water was all sandy; all the sand settled down to the bottom and when you turned the spigot, all you got was wet sand.

Ink drawing of a truck filled with a large load of mail bags and soldiers on top, labeled "A.P.O. 711."

For all my labors I got one v-mail letter but also got the satisfaction of not doing any training (asinine stuff that it is)."
Maurice explained that APO stands for Army Post Office and each had a regional number. V-mail was single sheet with a place to write the address on one side and the letter on the other; it would fold up so that it created it's own envelope for mailing.

Description

Ink drawing of an open front building with a flag on top, labeled, "Dispensary." Non-descriptive people inside, two outside and the hood of a jeep in the left foreground.
Verso: "Thursday - 21 Dec 44. This is the dispensary to which I went to have that charley horse taken care of. It is the dispensary at the negro outfit near us and and since its the nearest one to the clerk's school we go there. The doctor is white and all the enlisted men are colored. The bulletin beside the entrance is a pin up board covered with negress pinup girls. The round bunches on the tree in the left part of the picture are betel nuts (so I am told) and are chewed by the natives. They are said to be mildly intoxicant and discolor the teeth of the chewer, staining them red & giving them a perpetual 'pink tooth brush' appearance."
Maurice explained when you went to dispensary you went there because you weren't feeling well enough to work. The guys in charge of the unit would think that you were all goofing off if you took time to go to the dispensary. So if you didn't get sent to the hospital, they would put you to work cleaning M1 Garand rifles left over from WWI with gasoline so would be sure to be sick.

Description
WWII-Tent Life/New Guinea.
Charcoal or black pencil drawing of tents on platforms with the sides of the tents rolled showing the cots inside, labeled, "Tents-14 Ack Ack Command."
Maurice explained that Ack Ack is an abbreviation for Anti-Aircraft. The platforms of the tents were spaced a fixed distance apart. The side flaps of two tents would be lifted up and tied together to make a continuous roof and create a dryer corridor between them. The laundry had to be kept off the floor because the rats would be attracted to them. There were no carnivores on New Guinea and the ships that came in carried Norway rats. Huge rats; the size of a cat or larger, infested the island killing the some of the natural animal life.

The creek is in a small ravine just to the rear of the men. On the opposite bank are telephone poles on the left and trailers on the right. The tree at the right looks as if it had been shot off as does the stump just to the right of it. This is undoubtedly so since there are many Jap pillboxes around, all destroyed."

Description
WWII-Work Assignments/New Guinea.
Ink drawing of an assembled utility truck from behind. Cabinet doors along the visible side and a ladder showing from the opposite.
Verso: "Summer 1945."
Maurice explained the trucks were sent in pieces and assembled by whatever company was going to use them. That way they could pack more compact crates. One crate had one truck. During the war they were having trouble getting ships to send supplies (trucks, ammunition, guns) so the army had a contest of who could make the best suggestion for storing more supplies. The person won the contest had a very, very simple suggestion that they squash the toilet paper rolls flat.

Between the trees and the crates is a string of alligator tanks. Two men are in the truck putting on a sideboard. A crated truck can be seen in the extreme right."

Maurice added this was part of the motor pool where all the army vehicles (not war vehicles) were kept. If someone was going from one point to another they'd put their vehicle up for the night to have it serviced (oil, gasoline) for their next trip. The motor pool was staffed by auto mechanics. Snakes would sometimes be under the hood of the vehicles.

Most of us wanted to get out of the SWPA (Southwest Pacific Area). When they went back home for their three month visit they had to be a gentleman.
