Abstract I use a video game mod to help teach digital literacy and history. The game I would used as a basis for the mod is called Hearts of Iron IV. Modding is making alterations to the program code of a video game. This game is based on World War II (WWII) and the lead-up to the war. Students play as a nation and navigate it during this time frame. My goal is for students to also learn geography and major events like the Nazi German annexation of Czechoslovakia, and social skills like working on a team. Over six million people were subject to torture and killed during WWII; the theory of dehumanization provides a possible explanation for how people could commit such horrible acts toward another human being (Dawidowicz, 1981). Although extreme cases of dehumanization, like genocide, are not currently a frequent concern within the U.S., certain groups of people still experience dehumanization on a daily basis. By examining past research, it was determined that the act of dehumanization is a cognitive process that can be seen physically taking place within the brain. Harris and Fisk (2006) found that the cognitive reaction to dehumanized groups is demonstrated via exaggerated amygdala and insula reactions, which is consistent with past neurological research about the brain registering disgust. Various examples from research confirm the problem of dehumanization as a widespread issue. People from different ethnic groups, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people experiencing homelessness have all been found to be targets of dehumanization in the past and present. Due to the brain’s automatic response of registering disgust when presented with members of outgroups, there is little room left to empathize with members of those groups. Our ability to dehumanize has had many negative side effects within society, like discrimination and the development of an unwillingness to engage in helping behavior that could benefit members of outgroups (Haslam, & Stratemeyer, 2016). Given these costs, research regarding the prevention of dehumanization is necessary. Evidence exists to support the use of counter stereotypes and perspective taking as two effective methods to decrease dehumanization by promoting diversity and decreasing group bias (Prati, Vasiljevic, Crisp, & Rubini, 2015; Shih, Stotzer, & Gutiérrez, 2013). The prevention methods developed to decrease dehumanization could help to encourage individuals to support inclusive policies, help to dissuade discrimination, and promote diversity. Dehumanization is an individual cognitive process that in the past has contributed to mass murders such as the holocaust, and currently prevents people from empathizing with members of outgroups. Future research is essential to decrease the rates of dehumanization today. After all, WWI was the “war to end all wars,” immediately after the war, the allied forces created unprecedented international agreements, like the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations. With WWII, a much more devastating [conflict] emerging almost 20 years later, clearly these agreements did not "end all wars." Research has shown that the type of peace they were attempting to create was insufficient and positive peace should be considered as a viable means to create lasting peace. The difference between positive peace and normal peace is dramatic, both include the absence of violence, but positive peace goes much further. Positive peace incorporates nonviolence, compromises on both sides, and addresses the root causes of conflict. It is the best way to achieve sustainable world peace. The focus of this study is to view the helicopter as a tool of military strategy, more than a piece of hardware. My thesis is that the helicopter enabled the search-and-destroy war waged by American forces against the North Vietnamese forces. This is part of the overarching theme which we see developing in American military history during the post-WWII era: an over reliance on technology to wage wars, often to the neglect of strategy. This article details the adoption of the helicopter by the US Army, explores how air-mobility played a role in the Vietnam War, and ultimately offers perspective on the relationship between technology and strategy in the modern era. Maurice explained there was a cadre of permanently staged soldiers at the replacement depot. Soldiers coming from the States were sent there first to replace those deployed in the South Pacific. This depicts the Soldiers Casino run by a dealer from Las Vegas. The Army had problem with local gambling clubs (a very popular activity) that would take money from the recruits using marked cards. The dealer from Las Vegas guaranteed independent gambling and got his new unmarked cards directly from Las Vegas. It was the dealer who could afford to create the put-putting motor boats made from repurposed aircraft gasoline tanks. At the replacement depot, many soldiers were opening businesses and to make money on the side. One business was with the Australians who had bully beef (corned beef). The mess sergeants would sell the real meat issued by the US to the Australians and get equal amounts of the bully beef they would serve in the mess. The replacement depot had some very talented people and they practiced their trade on down time. A memory Maurice shared was that the living quarters were built on top of cliff with the garage for all the army vehicles below. One time while sun tanning, there was a man sitting in mid-air; he was actually on a high wire practicing his craft. The British had a number of coconut, and banana plantations; they would put a tax on some of the coastal natives and require the tax payment in money. They would take them from their village and move them work on a plantation, where they would stay there until they made enough money to pay the tax. The tags this native is wearing is a plantation identification tag. The earrings were newspapers or comic strips tucked in extended ear lobes. Maurice describes this drawing in his letter dated 1944-11-26_27 saying, "In the sketch of Raroro (that was the name given on his dog tag) that roll he was protruding from his left ear lobe is a roll of paper just for [scratched out word] ornament. The lobe and the complete edge of his right ear are pierced by small colored rings. They completely circle the ear. Just above that, sticking out of his hair is the end of a native comb. I haven’t shown it very well. They are made of split bamboo and are smoothing like this: [sketch of comb] when I first saw one I thought it was a fish hook. During the war they were having trouble getting ships to send supplies (trucks, ammunition, guns) so the army had a contest of who could make the best suggestion for storing more supplies. During that time someone told him the Coast Guard was hiring civilians to work at their stations and had hired a retired cabinet maker to contribute to the war effort. The first task was to make a waterproof water trough from 2" x 8" planks. Maurice was hired to be his temporary assistant. Some of those planks were warped so Maurice was to him sit on them to flatten it out. When the coast guard found out that was all the cabinet maker would let him do; they gave him a job as a painter. Maurice explained the drawing as a tall elevated vehicle built of pipe with small wheels and a motor. At the top was the platform with the bombsight mounted on a raised holder hooked up to an electronic magnet and a nail. They practiced in a large hanger with a Coca-Cola bottle at one end and the bombsight machine platform on the other. The person on the platform would sight in on the Coca-Cola bottle from the other end of the hanger. When it was in sight they would turn on the machine and instead of guiding a plane it would guide the platform driven by an electric motor. The object was to aim the bombsight from the platform to the bottle, start the bombsight platform, so that when the platform moved down to where the bottle was, the magnet would release and the nail would drive down the neck of the coca cola bottle. This was to teach them to aim the bombsight properly. It was very accurate. Nordon was the name of the bombsight and one of the greatest secrets of the early war. Diagram names the different parts. The drawing was done in Denver, Colorado where Maurice was studying to be a bombsight mechanic. When he graduated he was kept on as a math teacher. One of the guys, Mack, who was studying Italian with Maurice at Michigan State was sent first to Europe, then to the Asiatic theater. He was among the first Japanese Americans to be sent as interpreters to fight against the Japanese soldiers who were still fighting in the north of the Luzon. Maurice created the illustrations for this Manual of Behavior while someone else did the writing. The focus of this study is to view the helicopter as a tool of military strategy, more than a piece of hardware. My thesis is that the helicopter enabled the search-and-destroy war waged by American forces against the North Vietnamese forces. This is part of the overarching theme which we see developing in American military history during the post-WWII era: an over reliance on technology to wage wars, often to the neglect of strategy. This article details the adoption of the helicopter by the US Army, explores how air-mobility played a role in the Vietnam War, and ultimately offers perspective on the relationship between technology and strategy in the modern era. There are two plotlines that run throughout this work. The first plotline follows Sydney Baumann, a seventeen year old girl from Pendleton, Oregon, and her struggles with culture shock, the struggles of learning a new language, and the changes she makes as a person. The second plotline focuses on the character Audrey Baumann, between the years of 1938 and 1941, as she attempts to escape the NSDAP governed Germany at the start of World War II.
