Maurice explained that when he was a student at MSU learning Italian he lived in housing that used to be a women's dorm. The university gave it to the ASTP. This drawing was of Wasserman, from Detroit, nicknamed Junior. Junior had won a spelling bee and his prize was a large dictionary and he had taken it with him to the army. Every night he would read a page.

Maurice's unit had a baseball team who would play against other units. The games were very competitive games. Baseball was the popular game in the Philippines; on base and in Manila with military and civilians.
