Editor's Note

One nice thing about editing a journal such as this is that I never know what kind of research will appear on my desk. The research that happens at an institution like Western Oregon University is robust and exciting, but perhaps the best part of it is that undergraduate students are able to participate in research with faculty members in a very real way.

The papers in this issue are very different. The article by Kayleigh Pierson (available only to WOU community members) is about how pictures affect a person’s perceptions of animal rights, while the article by Ayla Adkins is about the effect of exposure to the DeafBlind community has on novice ALS interpreters. This research was conducted by undergraduate students with tenured or tenure-track faculty members, and displays the varied programs at Western Oregon University.

We are also very proud to include in this issue three prize-winning poems, which, with the excellent cover by Yannie Reyes-Alvarez, highlight the active humanities community at Western.

It’s a treat to work at an institution like Western Oregon University since it is committed to undergraduate research as demonstrated by the work published here and celebrated at our annual Academic Excellence Showcase held in May.
