Abstract: As an elementary school teacher, I have noticed that myself and many of my colleagues do not have a firm understanding of how students learn to read. Student reading scores are below 40% on a national, state, and school scale. In response to this, I researched effective small group interventions, as well as the Science of Reading to see what the best practices are for teaching reading; particularly in a small group setting. I used that research to design a Professional Development for the teachers in my school that not only condensed the research, but gave practical strategies for each area of reading.
