This Action Research Project examines the relationship between flexible assessment, student learning, and teacher teaching. Students in an 8th-grade social studies classroom were provide 4 options to assess their learning following a 5-day unit on US Government: one traditional quiz and three creative, alternative assessments. Data from student products, teacher reflections, and a student survey was analyzed to answer two research questions: 1.) does offering students choice in assessment options improve student motivation and engagement, and 2.) how can educators ensure alternative assessments are academically rigorous and valid measures of student learning. The data showed that students were appreciative of flexible assessment, but more research is needed to tie motivation and engagement to flexible assessment. Data analysis showed that alternative assessments are comparable to traditional quizzes, lending credibility to alternative assessments as valid measures of student learning.
