This action research project examined the effects of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) on student engagement in the classroom. The study was conducted over a two-week period in a Drama 1 classroom consisting of 21 students. Qualitative data were collected through classroom observations, teacher journals, and lesson plans. Findings indicated that student engagement increased when CRT practices were intentionally implemented and decreased when one or more CRT tenets were absent. In particular, culturally relevant content, opportunities for student voice and choice, and the inclusion of diverse popular culture references were associated with the greatest increases in engagement. While additional research is needed, the results of this study, supported by an extensive review of the literature, suggest that Culturally Responsive Teaching has a positive impact on student engagement and learning in the classroom.
