This action research project explored how differentiated instruction, collaborative learning, and performance-based learning supported engagement, musicianship, and joy in my middle school choir classroom. My research focused on a sixth grade choir class with students who entered with different musical backgrounds, confidence levels, and learning needs. Through lesson plans, observations, reflections, assessment data, attendance data, and feedback, I found that students were most successful when musical skills were scaffolded, connected to repertoire, and practiced with peer support. Overall, this project revealed that joy and quality musicianship do not compete, but can grow together when instruction is intentional.
