Abstract
-
In the text, the theme of women in the art world being looked over as professionals is studied through the lens of the artist Jean Cooke. Throughout history, artists having less opportunities than their husbands is a pattern that is seen in many artists’’ lives including in Cooke’s. Through research found in studies and articles spanning many years in the art industry the effects of this pattern were seen. Articles analyzing Cooke and her husband’s lives and art were also looked at for this project. Despite the obstacles facing Cooke as a woman, she fostered a career that is being discovered more and more. Using the art and life of Cooke as a reference, I created artworks that utilize the techniques, subject matters, and themes similar to Cooke. By looking at these women that were once ignored, important themes and artworks can be found and learned from to shape the modern art world.
