Abstract
-
When you think of the criminal justice system, you think of law enforcement, lawyers, and judges. However, there is another group of people who are not talked about often but are just as important. This group is called victim advocates. Although this group has been within the criminal justice system for around 50 years, victim advocates are still not widely known. Victim advocates are the main point of contact for victims, providing them with resources, court event information, explanations of rights, and how the criminal justice system works. I will further explore this topic through interviews with different advocates and those who work with them, statistics, and my personal experience as an intern within the criminal justice system. I will use the information I gathered to bring awareness to the strengths and limitations a victim advocate can provide, as well as to how this department continues to grow and adapt.
