Abstract
-
In this research, I examine legal settings in ASL–English interpreting, focusing on the competencies and preparation needed to work effectively in legal and courtroom environments.
Because legal interpreting carries high-stakes consequences, this research considers the pathways ASL–English interpreters take as they prepare for legal interpreting work. Data were collected through an anonymous questionnaire distributed through online professional networks. The findings indicate that formal training, mentorship, and real-world practice serve as foundational pillars of legal interpreter preparation. Together, these three pillars support interpreter readiness and competence by providing distinct but connected pathways toward specialized legal interpreting work.
