Abstract: Makoto Shinkai’s Garden of Words, 5cm per Second, and Your Name have all been acclaimed as powerful films both in Japan and around the world. This project analyzes some of the filming techniques that Shinkai uses to make these films successful. The analysis centers on the themes of isolation, passage of time, and missed connections that occur throughout all three of the films. This project uses shots from the films to demonstrate how Shinkai uses certain filming strategies to accentuate these themes with the aid of the narrative and storyline. Initial analysis shows that Shinkai favors repetition of shots, montages, and long shots in these films. Further analysis could study the entirety of his works for similar themes and establish even more styles that remain consistent through his work.
