Abstract

Acute pain is categorized by a length of 3 to 6 months, is directly related to soft tissue damage, and gradually resolves as the injured tissues heal. Chronic pain is defined as any pain lasting longer than 12 weeks. Over 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, and the health care costs and productivity losses approach $635 billion annually (Institute of Medicine Committee on Advancing Pain Research and Education, 2011). The lack of clear quality standards for ethical/legal use of opiates, the presence of individuals abusing the system, and the lack of updated, and involved public policy make finding a doctor willing to treat chronic pain quite difficult...
