Maurice explained that while he was waiting to be drafted he finished two years in college. During that time someone told him the Coast Guard was hiring civilians to work at their stations and had hired a retired cabinet maker to contribute to the war effort. The first task was to make a waterproof water trough from 2" x 8" planks. Maurice was hired to be his temporary assistant. Some of those planks were warped so Maurice was to him sit on them to flatten it out. When the coast guard found out that was all the cabinet maker would let him do; they gave him a job as a painter.
