Description
WWII-Work Assignments/New Guinea.
Ink drawing of men at tables all facing the same direction with books and papers in front of them.
Verso: "15 Dec. 44. Scene showing interior of our very busy (as you can easily see just by looking) military correspondence class. The open space between the top of the wall and the roof gives the appearance of a continuous mural circling room. The building is a long, low, ridge roofed building. The framework is made of 2x4s, the floor is cement, the walls tarpaper and the roof corrugated, galvanized iron. The tank seen outside, and above the roof of the other classroom, provides us with running water for showers and for bathing of face and hands. Quite a handy and unique thing to have around out here."
Maurice added that most of the buildings were improvised. Some of them would have grass hut tops, some would have corrugated metal, whatever they had available.
