Verso: "Nov. 11, 1944. A lister bag outside the company supply room around which the boys gathered awaiting the arrival of the Supply Sergeant to lead us over to the battalion supply room, thence to the camp supply room (that damned chain of command again), where I picked up some clothing I had coming."
Maurice explained the lister bag was supposed to purify the water. You would hang a bag with spigots at the bottom, filled with water. Chlorine was put in the water to kill any germs. The problem was that the water was all sandy; all the sand settled down to the bottom and when you turned the spigot, all you got was wet sand.
