Description
-
WWII-Natives/New Guinea.
Ink drawing of five natives digging a trench at the edge of heavy foliage.
Verso: "27 Dec 1944. These are the natives I told you about. They are digging drainage ditches for mosquito control purposes. While one works the others just stand around and watch. They do a good job but it takes a hell of a while to do it. One of them had a shovel on whose handle were burned the initials WPA. In the background are the tops of two officers tents and in the left background is their shower."
Note: WPA stands for Works Progress Administration.
